Hi Road Warrior,

Thanks very much for your advice - I think the CPC for our keywords isn't that great so maybe being number 1 on google wouldn't be that profitable anyway!

Its good to see an example of a site that targets a certain keyword - to see how its done correctly.

A BIG thank you for the link from your blog - hopefully that will push us up the rankings.

We will keep plugging away at it and see what comes of it - I think we may also create some more blogs to increase our chances of building a decent income from adsense.

I appreciate your quick response and all your help!!

To your success,
Brian

Interestingly enough, I am on the first page of the search results for the term "super paper mario walkthrough" and am number one for the term in youtube. I did it with my son as an experiment but then found out the keyword itself doesn't pay alot of money and it's been neglected every since. Before you talk about backlinks the first thing you need to ask yourself is what keyword are you targeting. You can do this with the adwords keyword tool. Choose the drop option that includes the CPC and you can see what the average bids are for that keyword. I wouldn't target anything less than a dollar. Once you know the keyword you are targeting, then it's time to try and rank for that. So, in your case if your term is retro games and you rank well for it, and it pays good, you'd want to get backlinks for the term. The best kind of backlinks are one way links to your site. You can go about that in two ways. One is through article marketing with ezine and others and the other is by getting links from sites relevant to yours using the anchor text you are shooting for (and it's variations). The other thing I would do is get several blog roll links from relevant sites which it looks like you've done that. Whether you get to number one or not depends on the strength of the sites ahead of you. The other thing you can do is go to other sites and create niche sites focused solely on your keyword. You can see an example of how I did this at http://superpapermariowalkthrough.blogspot.com from which I also gave you a blog roll link. Notice how targeted is for the term. With a little content on that site and links to other sites and mine sprinkled in, you can increase your ranking for that term sometimes as well. How many links do you need? It depends on the keyword. Remember also to vary your anchor text that includes variations of your targeted word too.

Hey,

My friend and I have a couple of blogs up and running in the retro games niche. We picked this as its something we are both interested in and thought it would be easier and fun to write about. Not sure if there is any money in it the market though!

My question is on getting backlinks. Is it just a case of going to related websites and asking for a link to yours or is there some other method (or many methods) to getting backlinks.

Our ZX Spectrum Games blog is on page 1 of Google for 'Zx Spectrum Games' which isn't too bad - but we're looking to push it up to the to spot if possible.

All the best with your strategy!

Cheers,
Brian

Road Warrior, I found your site through Griz's and I am enjoying watching your progress. But I have to point out something you wrote about in this post - quality writing in posts. Don't confuse the content on Griz's MMOLFB site with his money sites. He is trying to help people on MMOLFB, it was not intended to be a money maker. If I remember correctly, Griz points out that the worse you write the more money you make. You want people to find your site, see that it doesn't meet their needs and hopefully click on an ad to leave the site. Since Griz has learned the hard way not to share his niches, we won't get to see what his real money sites look like.

Good luck with your sites and I wish you success.
