Working On The Go

in Working

Hey guys. I’ve going to walk you through an experiment so bear with me as I give you a little background. So, I’ve been thinking about this blog for awhile and the original reason that I created it and it was mainly to focus on the word “working“. Note: You can see how I sent a link to my main page for that word. My original plan was that I thought it would be fun to prove that you basically pick any word that had a good inventory of advertisers. At that point, two words came to mind — work and sleep. I hopped over as we all do to the adwords tool to start checking it out. For the purposes of formatting, I’m going to put the screenshot I took down a little farther, but it seemed good enough for me to test out working on the go although sleep seemed better. I’d been reading Griz’s make money blog for a while and realized that having your keyword in your domain name is a big plus in attacking a keyword. If you can get your exact match in your domain name that’s even better. As you and I both know, that’s pretty unlikely now that so many people are into to trying to make money online. Now, you have to add something to it like I did with mine.

I then bought the domain name, then I forgot about it and didn’t do anything with it. Later, I was taking an inventory of my domain names and I came across it again. And, surprisingly, when I did, the domain name was a couple of years old. I’ve been told that the age of a domain name makes a big difference. One thing that isn’t clear for me is whether that’s from when you start link building or if that really matter. Age of both links and domain name are important factors, though no question about it.

About this time, I decided to write a long post about the Adsense Startup and out of no where, Griz linked to it. But because of all of this, I think I got this domain off track and I wanted to explain my theory on it. When you create a website and you put your keyword in your domain name, the first thing you should do is write a post like this titled: Working On The Go — with your keyword in it. While it might not be critical, what it does is tell Google what your site is going about. The other thing I think you should do when you set up a new site is send a link to it with your main keyword. In both cases, I kind of screwed up and my first post and link contained the word adsense. Work was no where to be found in anything I was targeting. This is important because you want to develop keyword authority for your site through your content something I didn’t do with this site.

When you first set up a site, be sure and tell Google what its about. It doesn’t mean you can’t rework it, it will just save you some time. So, let’s go back to the keyword tool. Here’s a snapshot of the results I found.

You can see that over a million people search for the top related keyword. Here are what some of them are:

work at home
work from home
part time work
work from home jobs
work at home jobs

This tells me that there are plenty of people search for the keyword with the top bid price on work at home being $2.56. That’s probably going to be a average size click as far as revenue if I target the keyword and make my site completely about that word. Not high, but worth targeting with enough volume. By that I mean, the domain, the title, the post, the tags, the categories. I think you can maximize your revenue if you do exactly what Google wants you to do and that’s make a highly targeted site by basically being the authority for that word.

The first step in this process is to write a post with my main keyword in it which is — working. In this case, I decided to put my site title as my post title. I think this is enough to tell Google what my site is about. In the process I thought the first step would to rank my site title number one. Currently, for the phrase “working on the go” I rank #26. Here’s the screenshot.

My first objective in re-developing my site around the proper keyword is this post. I’m expecting that this post alone once it gets indexed, will move me up in the rankings considerably. I doubt it will move it to number one since I don’t have authority for my word yet.

If not, I’ll need to add some more content to this blog and get some links. If you guys want to partake in this experiment. Please do me a favor and send me a link from a post on your site with the anchor text of “working on the go”. I doubt it would take to many links.

I’ve also set upĀ  category called “working” which I will explain how and why I am going to set those up the next time I post and tell you a little more about how I will target keywords on this site. In the meantime, don’t forget to join the Keyword Academy to learn everything you need to learn about it.

UPDATE: Later in the day I checked to see what things were looking like. After writing this post and getting 3 links to the post, I’ve moved to the 9th position. We’ll see how that moves up to the first position later.

Working On The Go now ranks number 9.

UPDATE #2: I’ve been keeping tabs on how I am progressing and have now moved up a bit more thanks to those who have sent me some links. This was the next day December 14, 2009.
